History of Mount Assiniboine

Mount Assiniboine is one of the most iconic and revered mountains in the Canadian Rockies. Located in British Columbia’s Banff National Park, this 11,870 foot (3,618 m) peak has been a destination for mountaineers and hikers for decades.

The first known ascent of Mount Assiniboine occurred in 1901 when two climbers from the Canadian Alpine Club made their way up the mountain. Since then, the mountain has become an increasingly popular destination for experienced mountaineers.

While there is no easy route to the summit, there are several ways to access Mount Assiniboine’s base camp. One of the most popular routes is to take a backcountry helicopter tour from Canmore, Alberta and land at Mount Assiniboine’s Og Lake Campground where you can begin your ascent.

Despite its majestic beauty, Mount Assiniboine is known as one of Canada’s deadliest mountains due to its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather patterns. The most recent death on Mount Assiniboine occurred in 2016 when a climber slipped and fell off a ridge while attempting to summit the peak. In addition to falls, avalanches are also a major risk on this mountain due to its high elevation and steep slopes.

Despite these dangers, many hikers still make their way up Mount Assiniboine every year with hopes of reaching the summit. Those who make it will be rewarded with unparalleled views of jagged peaks blanketed in snow as well as pristine alpine lakes and lush meadows – all framed by an endless sky framing this majestic peak.

To some, Mount Assiniboine may seem like an intimidating mountain but it's also one that provides hikers with an unforgettable experience that can't be found anywhere else in Canada – if you're prepared for it that is!
