Iceland’s Vatnajökull Glacier

Iceland is an amazing place to visit, and it’s no wonder why it has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. From breathtaking landscapes, to unique geothermal activity, to fascinating local culture, there is something for everyone who visits this incredible country. And of course, no trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the Vatnajökull glacier – one of the largest glaciers in Europe.

Vatnajökull is located in the south-east of Iceland and covers an area of 8,100 square kilometers, making it the largest glacier in Europe by volume. It's also one of the most impressive glaciers in the world with its jagged peaks and deep crevasses. Vatnajökull is composed of many different outlets that cover various volcanoes on the island. It's been estimated that these outlets account for around eight percent of all ice on Iceland.

The glacier boasts a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed while visiting its magnificent landscape. Tourists can take part in guided glacier hikes or explore by snowmobile or boat trips on its icy expanse. There are even ice caves located beneath Vatnajökull which can be explored with experienced guides – an experience that those wanting to get off the beaten track are sure to enjoy!

The glacier also has a long history which goes back centuries – during Icelandic folklore it was believed that Vatnajökull was home to trolls and other supernatural creatures! The earliest accounts of exploration date back to 1820 when geologist Georg Schwaarm first visited and documented his findings about the region’s ice formations. To this day, scientists from all over the world flock to Iceland’s glaciers for research purposes due to their unique position within Europe’s tectonic plates!

Whether you’re looking for adventure or just want to witness one of nature’s most magnificent creations; Vatnajökull Glacier should definitely be high on your list when visiting Iceland! With its breathtaking views and natural wonders, you won't regret making time for this incredible destination!
